This is my tentative plan for 2018. Gardening at 9,000 feet is a challenge, but with good planning and preparation for extreme weather it can be done. All beds are raised, 28" high. Soil was prepared with local natural soil, horse manure, duck manure + shavings, aspen leaves, and homemade compost. Garden is fenced to keep the deer and bunnies out, and beds are lined at the bottom with wire cloth and rocks to keep ground squirrels out. All beds are fitted with hoops that can be covered with plastic or shade cloth as needed--the shade cloth doubles as hail protection. For this cool, short season, crops are mostly cold tolerant--those that require more warmth are covered at night. Tomatoes and peppers are grown in the greenhouse (not shown here).
