HORT-101 Garden
Bed #1) For the successive vegetable garden kale, Brussel sprouts, carrots, cucumbers, cabbage, beets and cauliflower was planted. Each vegetable has a overlapping growing season and can be planted at various times from spring until late summer/early fall.
Bed #2) In the beneficial habitat garden, basil, tomatoes, peppers and oregano was planted. These plants draw pests from feeding on less pest resistant plants throughout the garden. They are also known companion plants to each other.
Bed #3) In the fruit garden, watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries and blueberries were planted. Each fruit are susceptible to vine bores, bacterial wilt and cucumber beetles. Row cover netting was installed over each fruit to help protect them from these pests, especially during initial growing before they become mature.
Bed #4) In the Scientific companion vegetable garden, peas, corn, lima beans and pumpkin was planted. Corn and pumpkin require nitrogen to grow. The peas and lima beans were planted to replace the nitrogen the corn and pumpkin use from the soil. Near by compost tumblers and bee hives were installed to fertilize the garden, keep insect pests away and the bees will pollinate the garden.
Lemmon grass was also planted to help keep mosquitos away as a natural deterant and tulips were planted to aid the bees for food.
At each garden bed a water spigot with soaker house/drip lines were installed for the garden irrigation. This type was chosen to prevent excessive evaporation and water runoff.
