Entire area is covered with wood mulch to hold in moisture. Rain barrels are hooked up to water through drip irrigation. Preciptiation is variable but typically will be sufficient in spring but absent in summer (semi-arid climate).
For planting I pull away the mulch, work in some compost and fertilizer a few days before planting and water if neccessary or let it dry out a bit if too wet. After planting seeds I put old metel shelves over to hold in moisture & heat. Once plants are up I put the mulch back over.
